Now this is real bullshit.I am not going to bawl about painful studies or stolen games, but I ll type out some dry and serious stuffs off my mind.
You have been warned.
You have been warned.
Education as it should be is now basic part of an Indian's life, but it shouldn't turn out to be a demon, crushing his taste buds, to taste no other sweetness. Its more of a "freedom to obey" as they say.The "earlier the better" ideology has proven itself not to be wrong but to
be fatal. Our education systems runs a bit too fast and this high pace system has got a few, nasty pit-falls.
Firstly, the fast pace, seriously detriments a students freedom of thought.A kid taught of gravity in LKG couldn't dream of flying apples(i know its taking it a cut higher ,still...).Or it doesn't let him/her to chalk their own explanations and theories of what the experience around.Their creativity is so hindered. The more laws you learn ,less free you are.May be this is why we were blessed with "the Albert Einstein".
"The foundations of
the western style of education lie solidly in the ideals of imparting knowledge upon students." >>read more here<<
That is, the process of learning doesn't take place exactly the way it should.Knowledge can be divided into three. Instinctual or genetically transmitted is the first one.Instinctual knowledge is accumulated by birth.Nobody teaches a spider to weave webs or a frog to pounce. These are genetically accumulated.Next is the Learned knowledge. This is socially accumulated, as an essential part of evolution.A child given with a lens may first inspect it with his fingers , tongue or nose. Then he might look through it and may find something interesting.Every society has a set of ethos.Similarly a child must have his own moral values which are frequently overwritten and edited as a part of growth. But in our educations system the child, actually isn't given a chance to reach his/her own assumptions about this world. We impart a set of rules upon them , hindering his creativity and imprinting our "Imparted" knowledge over the child's learning.
Second ,their lives get a direction, before they could choose. Its only after they have traversed a substantial portion, they recognize , that somewhere something went wrong. This may be the reason for the ever increasing number of drop outs in UG studies.
Third is very well explained here[The Hindu , forever]
Now an intelligent, by Indian middle class standards is one who tops in his class, and its 2010 , 62years of Independence(god!!).We speak but comfortably forget, our ethics and the importance of critical thinking. But unfortunately, we always tend to think on a line of suppression.I have ,a lot of times, seen parents requesting the teachers to scold and beat their child(if you too have, refer them to a psychologist, or admit them to some famous schools, one would do).Ok, back on track, we never give importance to a student's ideas.I remember a sir who before every new topic asks a few questions and keeps saying "Give me wrong answers, and when there are no more wrong answers to give you ll end-up giving the right one .... ".Yeah, the way to right is through the wrong and way to west is through the east.
We have instigated an unwanted sense of competitiveness into the little minds(not that little). We have molded them into cuckoos, kicking the eggs of the crows nest, the next thing cuckoos do once they're out of their shell. The competition in the system is inherent and cant be diluted even by the introduction of grades or so.The ability to appreciate or respect is neevr taught to the students, but they're told to stand up and wish their teachers when the teachers enter.I remember one of my class teachers telling us that the peon of our school was so happy about our class wishing him, every time he entered.
Many of you must have seen the stuff below:
He will have to learn, I know,
that all men are not just,
all men are not true.
But teach him also that
for every scoundrel there is a hero;
that for every selfish Politician,
there is a dedicated leader…
Teach him for every enemy there is a friend,
that all men are not just,
all men are not true.
But teach him also that
for every scoundrel there is a hero;
that for every selfish Politician,
there is a dedicated leader…
Teach him for every enemy there is a friend,
Steer him away from envy,
if you can,
teach him the secret of
quiet laughter.
if you can,
teach him the secret of
quiet laughter.
Let him learn early that
the bullies are the easiest to lick…
Teach him, if you can,
the wonder of books…
But also give him quiet time
to ponder the eternal mystery of birds in the sky,
bees in the sun,
and the flowers on a green hillside.
the bullies are the easiest to lick…
Teach him, if you can,
the wonder of books…
But also give him quiet time
to ponder the eternal mystery of birds in the sky,
bees in the sun,
and the flowers on a green hillside.
In the school teach him
it is far honourable to fail
than to cheat…
Teach him to have faith
in his own ideas,
even if everyone tells him
they are wrong…
Teach him to be gentle
with gentle people,
and tough with the tough.
it is far honourable to fail
than to cheat…
Teach him to have faith
in his own ideas,
even if everyone tells him
they are wrong…
Teach him to be gentle
with gentle people,
and tough with the tough.
Try to give my son
the strength not to follow the crowd
when everyone is getting on the band wagon…
Teach him to listen to all men…
but teach him also to filter
all he hears on a screen of truth,
and take only the good
that comes through.
the strength not to follow the crowd
when everyone is getting on the band wagon…
Teach him to listen to all men…
but teach him also to filter
all he hears on a screen of truth,
and take only the good
that comes through.
Teach him if you can,
how to laugh when he is sad…
Teach him there is no shame in tears,
Teach him to scoff at cynics
and to beware of too much sweetness…
Teach him to sell his brawn
and brain to the highest bidders
but never to put a price-tag
on his heart and soul.
how to laugh when he is sad…
Teach him there is no shame in tears,
Teach him to scoff at cynics
and to beware of too much sweetness…
Teach him to sell his brawn
and brain to the highest bidders
but never to put a price-tag
on his heart and soul.
Teach him to close his ears
to a howling mob
and to stand and fight
if he thinks he’s right.
Treat him gently,
but do not cuddle him,
because only the test
of fire makes fine steel.
to a howling mob
and to stand and fight
if he thinks he’s right.
Treat him gently,
but do not cuddle him,
because only the test
of fire makes fine steel.
Let him have the courage
to be impatient…
let him have the patience to be brave.
Teach him always
to have sublime faith in himself,
because then he will have
sublime faith in mankind.
to be impatient…
let him have the patience to be brave.
Teach him always
to have sublime faith in himself,
because then he will have
sublime faith in mankind.
This is a big order,
but see what you can do…
He is such a fine little fellow,
my son!
but see what you can do…
He is such a fine little fellow,
my son!
~ Abraham Lincoln
I still am not sure about the authorship. But no doubt,it gives a wonderful image of education.Perhaps, how it should be.Our education system, seriously, never considers the over all development of an individual, unlike what ,it should be.Moral science or value education as "subjects-of-grade" were never taught or studied seriously,in any of the six schools I have studied. We forget to learn and teach the chapters of mutual co-existence.The citizen of tomorrow, with high probability, would be a total alien to respect, compassion among many other ever depleting commodities.
But we are helpless ,as we still cant suggest a better system of education, efficient enough to quench such a large population. But still there's a lot that could be done, other than blogging about these.
For now, before sleep and sloth takes over my pathetic post, I shall bid farewell ...
and here's a pretty funny stuff...if youre bored...
Dude, I think tht "teach him" excerpt is a letter from Abe Lincoln to his son's teacher
